Transpower Warned Before Northland Power Outage

An inquiry into the June power outage in Northland, caused by a transmission tower collapse, found that Transpower New Zealand Limited (NZX: TRP) had been previously warned about insufficient contractor training. The Electricity Authority’s report highlighted that both Transpower and contractor Omexom withheld certain information during the investigation. Energy Minister Simeon Brown emphasized the report’s recommendation for increased use of distributed generation, which could form "energy islands" during major grid failures. The review underscored the need for better training and collaboration between operators and contractors to prevent future incidents.

At the time of writing, no official response has been made by Transpower regarding the report's findings.
