Strategic Shifts in Investor Stewardship Needed

Jul 25, 2024

New approaches to investor stewardship are being discussed to move beyond traditional ESG, company engagement, and proxy voting. At a global training program at Oxford University, experts, including Rowland Jackson, director of the Aotearoa New Zealand Stewardship Code, emphasized the evolving regulatory landscape and the need for strategic engagement. Jackson highlighted that while investor-company engagement is vital, it's not always effective, especially with complex issues like fossil fuel management.

For instance, PFZW divested from over 300 fossil fuel companies due to inadequate decarbonization plans. The Oxford program underscored the value of broader investor influence, such as policy engagement and working with NGOs. Jackson noted that strategic engagement requires resources and called for more fund managers to adopt the stewardship code, which aims to provide flexible guidelines for effective stewardship.
