Oji Fibre Solutions to Halt Paper Production at Kinleith Mill, Cutting 230 Jobs

Feb 14, 2025

Oji Fibre Solutions will cease paper production at its Kinleith Mill, leading to approximately 230 job losses. The Japanese-owned company informed employees at its Tokoroa site on Friday, confirming its earlier proposal to focus solely on pulp production. This decision follows the closure of its Penrose paper mill last year, which resulted in 75 job losses. Chief Executive Jon Ryder announced that the company will permanently shut down the PM6 paper machine at Kinleith, marking a significant shift in its operations. The move aligns with Oji's broader strategy to optimize its business amid changing market conditions, but it comes at a substantial cost to local workers and the community.
