NZ Timber Industry Avoids US Tariffs for Now

New Zealand's timber export sector, including companies like Lowe Corporation Limited (unlisted), has temporarily avoided being hit by the United States’ latest tariff measures. Although China remains the dominant destination for NZ timber, accounting for 57% of exports, the US is gaining importance, representing 6% of total forestry exports. In 2023 alone, radiata pine exports to the US were valued at $358 million—an increase of $128 million since 2019—making it the third-largest market after China and Australia. This exemption offers much-needed relief for exporters, who view the US as a high-growth opportunity. However, the industry remains cautious, knowing future policy changes could alter the trade landscape quickly. For now, the focus is on capitalising on this window of opportunity while continuing to diversify global market exposure to safeguard against shifting geopolitical and trade dynamics.
