NZ-India Trade Delegation Eyes Direct Flight Agreement, But Delays Likely

Mar 17, 2025

New Zealand’s trade delegation, led by Prime Minister Christopher Luxon, is aiming to secure an agreement for increased air connectivity with India. However, former trade minister Tim Groser cautions that direct flights could still face delays. Air New Zealand (NZX: AIZ) does not currently offer direct flights to India, and Air India has no direct services to New Zealand. Despite an open skies agreement and a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed in 2023 to facilitate air travel, progress remains slow.

Expanding direct air links is a key priority to strengthen business and tourism ties between the two nations. While increased flight frequencies may be achievable in the short term, launching direct services will require overcoming logistical and regulatory hurdles.
