NZ Government Plans New Laws to Replace RMA

Sep 20, 2024

The New Zealand Government plans to introduce two new laws to replace the Resource Management Act (RMA), aiming to simplify development processes and emphasize property rights. The first law will regulate the environmental impacts of activities, while the second will facilitate urban development and infrastructure growth. ACT MP Simon Court highlighted the importance of property rights in the reforms. Previously, the Labour government replaced the RMA with the Natural and Built Environment Act and the Spatial Planning Act. However, these laws were short-lived, lasting only 123 days before the current Coalition Government repealed them. The new framework is part of the ongoing effort to streamline resource management in New Zealand.
