MPI Biosecurity Officers Work Through Summer Shutdown to Protect NZ

While New Zealand experiences a quiet holiday season, the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) remains active, with many public servants working year-round. Among them are biosecurity dog handlers like Lushea Cooper and her beagle, Mable, who are critical to keeping New Zealand safe. With an increase in international arrivals during the summer months, the pair are busy inspecting cruise ships and airport passengers for biosecurity risks. As summer brings a rise in tourists and goods entering the country, the role of biosecurity officers becomes even more crucial in preventing harmful pests and diseases from entering the ecosystem.
