Meridian Energy Posts $121 million Loss Amid High Hedge Costs

Feb 26, 2025

Meridian Energy Limited (NZX: MEL), New Zealand’s largest electricity generator and retailer, reported a net loss of $121 million for the six months ending December 31, compared to a $191 million profit in the previous year. Operating cash flow dropped significantly to $50 million from $303 million. The downturn was primarily due to the company relying on costly hedge contracts to manage supply constraints. Despite these financial challenges, Meridian emphasized its commitment to supporting New Zealand’s energy needs.
