Manawa Energy Reports NZ$3.3 million Loss Amid Challenging Winter Market Conditions

Nov 08, 2024

Manawa Energy Limited (NZX: MNW) posted a NZ$3.3 million net loss for the first half of FY2025, a sharp contrast to the NZ$55.9 million profit reported in the same period last year. The loss was primarily due to a combination of low hydro inflows, limited wind activity, constrained gas supply, and high gas prices. This "perfect storm" led to lower production volumes and record-high wholesale electricity prices. The company had to hedge its positions to mitigate production shortfalls, compounding financial pressures. Manawa Energy’s results highlight the challenges posed by extreme market conditions, with the firm adapting strategies to manage volatility in the energy sector.
