Government Boosts Support for Community Housing Providers

Nov 26, 2024

The New Zealand Government has introduced changes to empower Community Housing Providers (CHPs) in delivering social housing, aiming to create a level playing field with Kāinga Ora, the state housing agency.

Housing Minister Chris Bishop unveiled the initiatives during the annual Community Housing Aotearoa meeting, emphasizing that state preference for its own entities is a thing of the past. The reforms are expected to enhance collaboration and efficiency in addressing the nation's housing challenges.

The announcement coincided with Community Finance launching a new initiative to support affordable housing development, showcasing a united effort to tackle housing issues. These changes reflect a broader commitment to diversifying solutions for social housing and fostering equity across providers.
