Genesis Energy Considers Acquiring Liquidated SolarZero

Feb 24, 2025

Genesis Energy Limited (NZX: GNE) is evaluating a potential acquisition of SolarZero, which entered liquidation last November. The solar subscription pioneer collapsed after its owner, BlackRock, withdrew financial support, citing unsustainable investment needs. While Genesis Energy sees potential in the asset, CEO Malcolm Johns stated that the company’s complex commercial structure must be resolved before any formal decision. BlackRock had fully acquired SolarZero in 2022 for $110 million, but the business struggled to remain viable. If Genesis proceeds with the acquisition, it could mark a significant step in expanding its renewable energy portfolio. However, due diligence will be critical in assessing the feasibility of the deal.
