Fisheries Minister Faces Critical Decision on Orange Roughy Quota

Sep 24, 2024

Sanford Limited (NZX: SAN) and the New Zealand fishing industry are awaiting Fisheries Minister Shane Jones' decision on the orange roughy catch quota for the Tasman Sea. The Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) has recommended reducing the current 2,058-tonne quota by 20% to 57%, following a similar 40% cut last year for the Chatham Rise fishery. The decision could significantly impact the industry, as orange roughy exports are valued at around $50 million annually. The Tasman Sea fishery, shared with other countries, is critical to New Zealand’s fishing economy, and any quota reduction will likely have far-reaching effects on industry players.
