Contact Energys Southland Wind Farm Faces Hurdles

Dec 16, 2024

Contact Energy Limited (NZX: CEN) has been advised that its proposed 55-turbine wind farm in Southland may face significant challenges or require downsizing to secure consent. The project aims to generate approximately 300 megawatts (MW) of power, with turbines reaching a tip height of 220 meters and each capable of producing up to 7MW.

However, the proposal is opposed by the West Catlins Preservation Society, which argues that the Slopedown site is an outstanding natural landscape and unsuitable for such development. These concerns have led consenting officials to suggest the project could face "insurmountable difficulties."
