Foodstuffs North Island and Foodstuffs South Island (Foodstuffs NZ) expressed disappointment after the Commerce Commission (ComCom) declined their proposed merger. The two grocery cooperatives had submitted a request in late 2023 to merge into a single national entity. After multiple extensions in the review process, ComCom announced its decision, citing concerns about competition. According to John Small, chair of ComCom, the merger would have caused a permanent structural shift in the grocery industry and could have significantly reduced competition in the market.
