Alliance Group to Close Smithfield Plant Amid Declining Sheep Numbers

Alliance Group Limited (NZX: ALI), New Zealand's only fully farmer-owned meat cooperative, has confirmed the closure of its Smithfield plant in South Canterbury following a drop in sheep numbers. The company initially proposed the shutdown last month, citing an oversupply within its processing network. Located near State Highway 1 in Timaru, the Smithfield plant primarily processed sheep but also handled venison and calves. After consultation with staff ended on October 11, the decision to close was finalized. Seasonal processing of sheep, calves, and night-shift venison had already ceased prior to the announcement. The move is part of Alliance Group's efforts to adjust its operations to changing market conditions.
