Alliance Group Ltd (NZX: ALF), New Zealand's only fully farmer-owned meat co-operative, has proposed the closure of its Smithfield meat-processing plant in Timaru. If confirmed, the plant will stop processing sheep meat, calves, and venison night shifts in South Canterbury. Venison processing will continue until the end of December, allowing time for the company to arrange alternative facilities for deer processing. Alliance Group's CEO, Willie Wiese, highlighted that the proposal is part of ongoing efforts to streamline operations.
